EASTERN MARKET GREEN STORMWATER MANAGEMENT STRATEGY
The Eastern Market Green Stormwater Management Strategy proposes district-wide sustainable stormwater management strategies that capture runoff, reduce drainage charges, beautify the neighborhood, and provide environmental education opportunities. The study was prompted by Eastern Market Corporation’s (EMC) interest in taking a more proactive approach to stormwater management based on its focus on sustainable development and the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department’s need to reduce its combined sewer overflows and treatment costs. This proposal lays the framework for a viable plan to disconnect hundreds of acres of stormwater catchment from the combined sewer system, which would be a massive win for clean water and an example of a proactive and creative green infrastructure partnership between public and private stakeholders that is unprecedented in scale. The first step toward implementation of this project included educational signage. This strategy is the basis for a current Watershed Improvement District feasibility study led by EMC and The Nature Conservancy.
