O'SHEA PARK SOLAR OVERLOOK
O’Shea Park is a decommissioned city park and new home to a solar array powered by DTE and the City of Detroit. The O’Shea Park Solar Overlook proposes to repurpose portions of a former recreation center – slated for demolition and beloved in the community – as a pavilion and viewing platform overlooking the solar array. The project re-envisions the recreation center, retains its memory, integrates the structure with the surrounding landscape, and provides an alternate model for demolition in Detroit. The Detroit Planning Department is also implementing a small, active landscape project adjacent to the solar array. The landscape architect on the active park design is Spackman Mossop Michaels. DCDC supported engagement efforts and developed the concept for how the existing recreation center could be partially deconstructed and repurposed as a community pavilion, plaza and viewing platform. Due to budget and time constraints, the platform has since evolved.
